Die Geschichte

In den achtziger Jahren leitete ich als Schweizer die Tochtergesellschaft der Zürich-Versicherungs-Gruppe in Portugal. Auf meinen Geschäftsreisen durch das Land wuchs mir besonders die Dão Gegend um Viseu ans Herz. 1991 kauften meine Frau Elisabeth und ich 4 Hektaren kaum mehr bewirtschaftetes Land und ein fast verfallenes Haus in Oliveira do Conde. Weil Elisabeth und unsere drei Töchter Ester, Isabel und Julia auch Maria in ihren Namen trugen, tauften wir den Hof ‹Quinta das Marias›.»[/fusion_text][fusion_accordion][fusion_toggle title=“Weiterlesen“ open=“no“]Als erstes stellten wir als Verwalter António Coelho Lopes an, kauften einen Traktor und pflanzten 2 Hektaren neue Reben an. Durch den Zukauf von angrenzendem Land sind daraus in der Zwischenzeit 12 Hektaren geworden. Für uns war es wichtig, nicht einfach Investor eines Weingutes zu sein, sondern wir wollten selber Hand anlegen und unsere Weine gestalten. Mit der Hilfe von Eng. António Narciso und harter Arbeit bildete ich mich als Autodidakt zum «Winemaker» der Quinta das Marias aus.

Die Gesetzgebung als Selbstabfüller verpflichtet uns, nur Trauben aus eigener Produktion zu verwenden. Diese werden vom ersten Rebschnitt im Winter bis zur Ernte mit grösster Sorgfalt gepflegt. Bereits zu Beginn standen der Wille und die Verpflichtung, nur Weine allererster Qualität zu keltern. Sie sollten die Eleganz des typischen Dão widerspiegeln und deshalb auch im harten internationalen Wettbewerb bestehen können.

Die ersten guten Weine produzierten wir 1998, und der Dão des Jahres 1999 erhielt bereits eine Goldmedaille im Wettbewerb der Dão-DOC-Behörde. Der bisherige Höhepunkt ist die Verleihung des Preises «Bester reinsortiger Wein des Jahres» für den Touriga-Nacional Reserva 2011 anlässlich der Portugal Wine Challenge – des wichtigsten Weinwettbewerbs des Landes.

Der bekannte portugiesische Weinjournalist Rui Falcão schrieb Im Jahre 2012 in der Zeitschrift «Fugas» über die Quinta das Maria:

Die Menschen

Elisabeth Eckert ist für die Liegenschaft der Quinta verantwortlich. Aus dem beinahe verfallenen Haus hat sie ein ländliches Daheim für die ganze Familie und die vielen Gäste und Besucher geschaffen. Sie begleitet Peter Eckert zu den zahlreichen Messen und Degustationen, die während eines Jahres besucht werden. Während der Vindima versorgt und verpflegt sie die Helfer und packt auch beim Abfüllen und Etikettieren kräftig zu.

Peters Eckerts Handschrift zeichnet für die Produktion der Weine verantwortlich. Die schönste Zeit des Jahres ist für ihn die Vindima – die Weinernte. Aber auch sonst verbringt er viel Zeit im Weinkeller. Er liebt die Handarbeit, die Weine umzupumpen, zu filtrieren, die idealen Assemblagen zusammenzustellen und zu degustieren. «Diese Arbeit ist völlig anders als meine frühere Tätigkeit als Versicherer. Nach dem unvermittelten Tod seines Vaters António Coelho Lopes musste Victor 2014 vorzeitig in die Fussstapfen seines Vaters treten, der die Quinta seit Beginn mitaufgebaut hatte. Heute vertritt Victor Lopes Peter Eckert während dessen Abwesenheit, besorgt die Arbeitseinteilung, das Personalwesen, die Logistik und einen grossen Teil der Mit Luís Lopes haben wir auf den 1. August 2018 einen Oenologen fest angestellt. Luís hat in Portugal studiert und sich in Frankreich, Deutschland und Neu Seeland weitergebildet. In den letzten acht Jahren arbeitete er als verantwortlicher Oenologe auf einem grossen Gut im Dão. Wir freuen uns sehr auf die Zusammenarbeit mit Luís, bringt er doch neue Ideen und viel Erfahrung mit. Von uns allen ein herzliches Willkommen !

Nach vielen Jahren treuer Teilzeitbeschäftigung haben wir Fátima Ventura als Vollzeitangestellte in unser Team aufgenommen. Fátima sorgte dafür, dass auch bei uns eine „Frauenquote“ Einzug nahm. Sie arbeitet in den Reben wie auch im Keller und wir können uns die Quinta ohne Fátima nicht mehr vorstellen.

Ausschliesslich aus den einheimischen Encruzado Trauben produzieren wir seit bald 15 Jahren ein ganz besonderer Weisswein. Sein eigenständiges Profil begeistert Jahr für Jahr mehr Weinliebhaber.

Als junger Wein ist der Encruzado äusserst feingliederig und delikat, nach einigen Jahren in der Flasche entwickelt er aber ein ausserordentlich markantes Profil.

Barricas

Nach dem Erfolg des letzten Jahrgangs haben wir auch 2017 den in erster Linie von der Encruzado Traube gestützten Quinta das Marias «Barricas» in 225 L französischen Eichenbarriques vergärt und dann – etwas zaghafter als im Vorjahr – auf feiner Hefe ausgebaut.

Wir sind sehr zufrieden mit dem Resultat, zeigt sich doch der Wein wunderbar ausgeglichen mit schöner Frucht, angenehmer Säure und einem kräftigen Volumen im Gaumen.

Die äusserst vielseitige Touriga-Nacional Traube überrascht uns jedes Jahr von neuem. Wir versuchen jeweils, von unseren drei mit Touriga bestockten Rebbergen den Besten auszuwählen. 2020 kamen die besten Trauben vom Rebberg mit dem Namen «Porto». Die Ausrichtung und die Verfügbarkeit von Wasser im Terroir half mit, die Trauben langsam und gleichmässig reifen zu lassen, was zu einem hervorragenden Touriga-Nacional mit schöner Säure und wunderbar eingebauten Tanninen führte.

Schon der Name ist uns Ansporn, über den Tellerrand hinweg zu schauen, quer zu denken, bestehendes in Frage zu stellen und Neues, Aussergewöhnliches zu schaffen. Mit unseren Out of the bottle Weinen wollen wir dem Weinliebhaber unkonventionell und mit möglichst wenig Intervention die Besonderheiten unseres Terroirs, der Reben, des Klimas, der Weinbereitung und die einmalige Reinheit des Dão vermitteln. Wir wollen aufzeigen, welch breites Spektrum zwischen der Avantgarde und der Vergangenheit möglich ist.

Wichtig ist für uns, dass diese neue Kollektion frei jeglicher Ideologie keinen Stempel irgendeiner Moderichtung trägt.

Barcelo ist eine von mehreren Rebsorten, die in den alten Weinbergen der Region Dão vorkommen. Sie zeichnet sich dadurch aus, dass sie diskret im Aroma, aber lebendig und strukturiert ist. Wir können sagen, dass dies eine der wichtigsten „Früchte“ unserer kleinen „Labor-Kellerei“ ist. Wir haben Jahr für Jahr festgestellt, dass dieser Wein eine kurze Reifezeit in Fässern und dann eine lange Zeit auf der Hefe, aber in Edelstahl, benötigt. Aber diese und andere Schlussfolgerungen sind nur der Anfang unseres Lernprozesses, der sicherlich diejenigen begeistern wird, die einzigartige und aufregende Weine trinken möchten.
